  • Practical next steps

Choose a calculator

Start with the decision you are trying to make. The three published tools work together: check a single purchase, see the monthly budget it has to fit into, then test a specific car against both.

Working out a one-off purchase? Use the Can I Afford It Calculator. Want to see the whole month first? Start with the Monthly Budget Calculator, then price a vehicle with the Car Affordability Calculator, or browse all calculators.

What AffordPilot is, in short

What is it?
A free website of everyday money calculators covering purchase affordability, monthly budgeting and car costs.
What do the calculators do?
They turn a few of your own figures into a clear result, explain what that result means, and suggest a safer scenario to compare against.
Is it free, and is an account needed?
Every tool is free. There is no sign-up, no email address and no paywall.
How are results calculated?
In your browser, with JavaScript. Each calculator page documents the formula and the assumptions behind it.
Is your data stored or sent anywhere?
No. Nothing you type is transmitted to a server or saved to an account. Only your chosen display currency is kept in local storage.
How should the results be treated?
As educational estimates, not personalised financial advice. Currency selection changes formatting only — there is no exchange-rate conversion.

Helpful financial guidance

Affordable is not the same as possible

Most purchases are technically possible — you can put almost anything on a card or finance it over three years. Affordability is a different question: can you pay for it and still handle a broken boiler, a vet bill or a month of reduced hours? That is why every AffordPilot calculator looks at what is left afterwards, not just whether the money exists today.

Keep an emergency buffer

A widely used rule of thumb — not a guarantee — is to keep three to six months of essential spending in easy-access savings. Our affordability tool treats three months as the floor: a purchase that dips into that buffer is flagged as tight or risky, even when your account balance would technically cover it.

Watch the monthly commitments

One-off purchases are easy to recover from. Monthly commitments — subscriptions, finance agreements, insurance on a bigger car — quietly reduce the disposable income you will have for years. Before signing up to anything recurring, add the payment to the monthly budget calculator and see what your leftover becomes.

Give yourself a waiting period

For anything above about a week of income, a short cooling-off period costs nothing and removes most impulse regret. Run the numbers, note the result, and come back in a few days. If the answer still looks comfortable, it probably is.

How to treat these results

Every calculator page states the formula it uses and the assumptions behind it, so you can check the reasoning rather than trust a black box. The output is an educational estimate — not financial, lending or investment advice — and AffordPilot does not recommend specific products, lenders or investments. Verify anything important with your own figures and, for a large commitment, a qualified adviser. See our about page, disclaimer, privacy policy and terms, or contact us with a question.

This calculator is an educational estimate only. It does not account for tax, inflation, credit terms or your personal circumstances, and it is not financial advice. Speak to a qualified adviser before making a large financial commitment.
